Life After Stroke for Caregiver Spouses
I'm Carol Nelson with Today's Health News. After a stroke there may be two survivors, the patient and their spouse. A seven yearstudy found the spouse care givers of stroke patients may also face an increased risk ofmental and physical health issues. The study followed two groups of couples, one groupwhere one of the couples were stroke patients and another where neither had suffered a stroke.Caregiver spouses reported more mental health issues like depression and reduced socialfunction than spouses of nonstroke patients. When stroke survivors had cognitive difficultiesor were depressed, it strongly affected the caregivers quality of life. Researchers saythe results highlight the impact on the spouses
mental health due to demanding changes intheir life situation. If you are a caregiver, ask your about support groups for spouseswho survived stroke.
